Cabbage Patch Baby

Red cabbage ink on watercolor paper

11" x14"

2021

Cabbage patch baby is a portrait of my niece Haven. The painting was formed by layering ink, using the lightly pigmented ink I made. I created a naturally pigmented ink by extracting the purple pigment from red cabbage. The red cabbage was shredded and then boiled in water with salt to extract the pigment. Reducing it down into as little liquid as possible to make the pigment more concentrated.

Accessibility Description:

An 11"x14" portrait of a baby wearing a winter hat in the center of watercolor paper, painted with a purple ink. The ink is made from the purple pigment steeped from red cabbage.
